Judges Award Saint Arnold Brewing Company Two Medals At Great American Beer Festival
Saint Arnold Amber Ale and Saint Arnold Summer Pils Take Honors
HOUSTON, OCT. 4, 2005 - The brewers from Houston-based Saint Arnold Brewing Company, the oldest microbrewery in Texas, returned home with two highly coveted medals from the 2005 Great American Beer Festival (GABF). Judges awarded Saint Arnold a silver medal in the Munchner-Style Helles category for Saint Arnold Summer Pils and a bronze medal in the Bitter category for Saint Arnold Amber Ale.
The GABF was held over the weekend at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver. The event boasted the biggest collection of American beers - 1,672 - ever presented in a single location.
"No nation in the world produces a greater variety of artisan beers than the United States," said Paul Gatza, director of the Brewers Association, which organizes the event. "The GABF showcases those beers and their makers, it’s the world’s best beer-tasting event."
The GABF is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious tasting competitions. More than 100 professional judges from the United States and abroad evaluated 2,335 beers entered by 466 domestic breweries. Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded in 69 beer-style categories. Texas breweries took home a total of 13 medals. Only California and Colorado had more winning beers.
"As a beer lover, I enjoy going to the GABF so I can sample the best beer selection on earth and expose more people to what we’re doing in Texas," said Brock Wagner, founder and CEO of Saint Arnold Brewing Company. "Adding two more medals to our collection is confirmation that we’re on the right track, especially considering the level of competition and quality we were up against."
The event set an attendance record, with 29,500 beer connoisseurs streaming through the turnstiles to enjoy one-ounce samples of the beers offered by Saint Arnold Brewing and the hundreds of other participating breweries.
