Trained Storytellers Can Educate, Engage and Motivate People to Get Involved

HOUSTON, June 13, 2019 - Three digital health companies that participated in DPK Public Relations' media interview skills training workshops, coordinated by client Texas Medical Center's Innovation Institute, have announced successful fundraising efforts. The companies include Meru, Roundtrip and Sani Nudge, which raised a combined $10 million.

"We are proud to be affiliated with TMCx and the innovative companies that participate in the accelerator program," said Dan Keeney, APR, founder and president of DPK Public Relations. "These startups are bringing exceptional value to market, improving patient outcomes and in many cases improving operational efficiencies for hospitals and healthcare providers."

The three companies that have secured new funding showcase how digital health promises to transform the patient experience. Meru has created a low-cost digital mental health clinic that offers an app-based treatment program from licensed therapists. RoundTrip solved the problem of patients getting to and from doctor appointments by developing a platform for patients to book transportation. And Sani Nudge created sensors that track and monitor sanitization practices within hospitals.

Since 2017, TMCx has included DPK Public Relations' media training workshops as part of its four-month curriculum for entreprenuers participating in its accelerator program. It is ranked as one of the top accelerators in the country by Seed Accelerator Rankings Project. Out of 150 companies that applied for the early 2019 cohort, 21 startups were selected to participate. It was the accelerator's most international cohort, with U.S. companies joined by peers from Canada, Australia, Israel Denmark and the U.K. They started in February and culminated earlier this month with TMCX Demo Day.

"Storytelling is an essential competency for every executive, and the earlier we can get in there and establish a solid foundation the better," said Keeney. "While our workshops are referred to as 'media training,' the techniques we focus on can be used to strengthen communications with anyone, including potential funding sources."

The techniques include processes designed to maximize the effectiveness of preparation and to strengthen messages so they are personal, memorable and resonate with the audience. The workshops build understanding of the impact of body language, help participants anticipate questions and keep their comments positive and benefits-focused.
